Dr. Zhaoyang Liu is a Senior Scientist in the Water Group. His expertise involves the development and optimization of advanced process and materials. His work is frequently cited internationally (h-index 33, as of Jan. 2018). He is the pioneer in achieving “energy recovery from the brines of seawater and wastewater with pressure retarded osmosis process” and “producing drinkable water with a low energy forward osmosis process”, both of which were published in his field’s top journal “Energy & Environmental Science” (Impact Factor = 30), and his work in photodegradation of pollutants in water was featured by the journal “Nature”. He holds a number of international patents for water treatment, some of which have been successfully licensed for commercial enterprise. As part of his Water Security Research Portfolio, Dr. Liu is currently coordinating the pillar of Process Development and Optimization, which focuses on addressing the stakeholders' pressing issues in seawater desalination and wastewater treatment. He serves as an Editorial Board Member of Scientific Reports – a Nature journal, as a result of his remarkable research profile and a high standing within the global scientific community for water treatment.
